Fierce headhunter Magomed Abdusalamov knocks Pettaway down, sends Jason’s mouthpiece into the crowd

Denzil Stone – Atlantic City

Big-hitting Russian southpaw Magomed Abdusalamov picked up his first professional title on Saturday, March 17 as he trounced fellow power puncher Jason Pettaway by way of fourth round technical knockout at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Abdusalamov’s brute strength and power was too much for Pettaway, who was pounded down to the canvas in the fourth round, beat the count, but took a shellacking until he was stopped on his feet.

Official verdict: Abdusalamov by way of fourth round technical knockout.

His second outing in 2012, Abdusalamov took the fight to American opponent Jason Pettaway, making positive forward steps in the opening round while Pettaway attempted to use speed and movement in order to negate Mago’s obvious power. Magomed thumped Pettaway with straight left hands, short-range left hooks, left cross shots to the body and three-punch combinations to the head and body but Pettaway stood strong to the onslaught, fought with patience and was able to peel off his own flurries.

Pettaway was forced onto the backfoot as any confidence he had found from being able to land in round two, was depleted in the third round. There was little fluidity to Mago’s fighting style… when he threw, he could sometimes look awkward, but after three or fire single-fire shots he’d put his punches in bunches and there was no escaping his concussive power. Abdusalamov finished the round by crushing a huge power shot onto Pettaway’s cheekbone.

By the fourth round, Abdusalamov was already in unfamiliar terrain as no professional prizefighter had taken Mago past three stanzas, yet Pettaway did not outlast the others by much as he was dropped one minute into the round after some clubbing blows and as soon as Pettaway was on his feet, Mago punched the gumshield out of the American’s mouth. Eventually the referee stopped the beating to award Abdusalamov a fourth round technical knockout.

With victory, Abdusalamov moved up to 14-0-0, 14ko while Pettaway suffered his first career defeat and dropped to 11-1-0, 8ko.
