McKenzie retains light heavyweight Commonwealth title with third round knockout of Dodson

Big-hitting Ovill McKenzie made a successful first defence of the Commonwealth light heavyweight championship title that he won last year by destroying challenger Tony Dodson in three tough rounds at the Bowler’s Arena in Manchester on Friday, February 3. McKenzie may officially have a light stoppage record but, barring Tony Bellew (who he has knocked down), ‘The Upsetter’ has now stopped all four of his most recent opponents.

Official verdict: McKenzie wins by way of third round knockout.

Frenetic-paced power puncher McKenzie began the fight in a customary fashion for the Jamaica-born Derby-resident. His opponent, and challenger, Dodson, engaged in an element of spoiling in order to keep Ovill away from him and, when he wasn’t initiating a clinch, retained an upright guard in the hope of weathering the early storm.

If the first round was all McKenzie, Dodson got his own back in the second as he scored with potent right hands that landed sweetly on Ovill’s temples. Neither fighter has particularly noteworthy knockout records but they can muster deceptive strength and power and both men returned to their stools bleeding… Dodson leaked claret from the corner of his mouth while McKenzie had a minor nose bleed.

McKenzie had Dodson on jelly legs at the beginning of round three, on the canvas moments later and, even though he made it to the upright position on the count of nine and was allowed to continue, the referee intervened after a shellacking of physical abuse from McKenzie as a proud Dodson was stopped on his feet.

With victory, McKenzie moved to 20-11-0, 9ko while Dodson dropped to 28-7-1, 14ko.
