Crowd favourite Joe Selkirk extended his undefeated streak to eight professional fights as he stopped Ryan Toms at the Liverpool Olympia on Friday, January 20 on Box Nation. The fight was fought at a low tempo and Selkirk took a while to find his groove but his general timing and shot selection – in particular the looping left hand – inflicted a swelling terrible enough for Toms to be withdrawn from combat by the third man in the ring.

Official verdict: Fifth round TKO.

Renowned prospect Joe Selkirk, singled out for a promising future in the fight game, denied Toms easy passage into the inside by fighting tall. At 6’1 he would keep his left foot far forward, rendering his high chin an even more awkward target. There was little trading in the opening round – Toms scored with a one-two to the body – but overall, there was little to separate the pair.

In rounds two and three, Selkirk was fighting with what could be termed an economic output but he was precise, frustrated his opponent and, by the end of play in the third, Toms’ corner had to work the enswell over a fierce swelling that Selkirk had angered.

Whilst the action was not obvious, it will have been enough for Toms to feel the effects of war as his face, around the eye, was a mess and Selkirk friend and sparring partner – Tony Bellew – could be heard barking: ‘One more round and he’s not coming out!’

In the final minute of the fifth round, Toms received news he didn’t want to hear as the referee deemed Toms in no fit position to continue due to the grotesque swelling that had sealed the 30-year-old southpaw’s eye shut.

“He was awkward,” said Selkirk of Toms to Box Nation. “It took me a few rounds to get going but full credit to him. People are saying good things about me but they haven’t seen nothing yet, I want to be British champion by the end of the year and with a bit more experience I’ll be ready for it.”

With the triumph, Selkirk moved to 8-0-0, 5ko while Toms dropped down to 9-2-1, 4ko.
