Schaefer has STAPLES Center held on May 19 for prospective Khan v Peterson rematch

In anticipation of a Amir Khan v Lamont Peterson II, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer has earmarked May 19, 2012 as the date and STAPLES Center, Los Angeles as the venue. Furthermore, the IBF and WBA will convene on January 18 and 19 in New York regarding Team Khan’s appeal over the two point deductions given by referee Joe Cooper and the resultant majority decision loss earlier this month, in Washington DC.

“We have filed an official appeal which will trigger a thorough investigation from the IBF and WBA,” said Schaefer, according to Boxing Today. “I’ve been given an update… they [the organisations] want the appeal in New York on January 18 and 19,” he confirmed.

“They will make their decision on whether the outcome should be overturned, should stand or if there needs to be a rematch.”

Both Khan and Schaefer have expressed their displeasure regarding the manner in which the unified super lightweight championship fight was officiated and scored by the ringside judges. When Khan returned to England, he informed Sky Sports News that master of ceremonies Michael Buffer had informed him in the immediate aftermath that he was the winner, however, by the time the scorecards then came back for the official announcement, Peterson had got the nod.

There has also been discrepancies over the IBF’s scorecard, which disappeared, and then re-emerged two days later.

Schaefer believes Khan has been victim to what he describes as “home cooking.”

He said: “There is smoke in relation to the scorecards. Where there’s smoke, there’s fire. There is nothing in the rules related to pushing [regarding the deductions]. Even excessive pushing isn’t a foul. There was no basis for a one point deduction, certainly not for two.

“It’s one of the worst cases of home cooking I have seen. The decision must be corrected. I hope it will be corrected. The WBA and IBF have an opportunity and an obligation to do the right thing.”

On the issue of a rematch, Schaefer stated: “We’ve been able to secure the STAPLES Center in LA on May 19 – neutral ground for both fighters. We’ve made Team Peterson a seven-figure offer and are waiting to hear back… I’d be shocked if they don’t offer a rematch.”
