Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is reveling in his ability to, along with DiBella Entertainment, put together one of 2012’s hottest promotions in Victor Ortiz v Andre Berto II: Repeat or Revenge. The non-title 12-round welterweight bout is a rematch of April’s thriller, in which Ortiz de-throned Berto in a fight of the year candidate. The do-over, set for February 11, will have a fitting backdrop – Las Vegas – as the MGM Grand Garden Arena plays host.

“We are definitely starting out 2012 with a big bang,” said Schaefer during media duties this week. “Ortiz-Berto II is boxing at its best and the single biggest fight that can be made outside of Mayweather-Pacquiao.”

The Golden Boy promoter continued by remarking that, from the build-up to fight night, the contest will be given pay-per-view treatment, only it will be free-to-air.

A Fight Camp 360 will also be provided by the Showtime network, who outbid HBO for the broadcasting rights: “This is the first time a premium channel fight is being supported like a pay-per-view event,” he said of the card that also features a middleweight attraction between Cuban hotshot Erislandy Lara against former world title challenger Ronald Hearns as well as a super featherweight showdown between Gary Russell Jr and the ever-active TBA.

The first bout contained an undefeated champion – Berto (28-1-0, 22ko) – and a challenger about to confirm a regeneration; Ortiz (29-3-2, 22ko). The 36 minutes of fistic duty was all action and contained blood, guts, swellings, knockdowns aplenty with Victor gaining the decision verdict. Schaefer is fully confident the second go will be just as noteworthy.

“Their first fight may be ‘Fight of the Year’ and both guys want to set the record straight. The rematch might be 2012 ‘Fight of the Year.’ Both of these world champions are guaranteed to put on a great show. The 147lb division is the one with all the biggest names and we have two of them fighting each other.

“We’re expecting a sellout,” he finished.
