Ibrahim Harb – Birmingham

Lamont Peterson v Amir Khan II could be made for March 31, 2012, according to both prizefighters. The two engaged in a fight of the year nominee last weekend, December 10 (Khan’s second year running following his decision victory over Marcos Maidana, 2010), with Peterson edging Amir by way of split decision, however, Lamont – the new unified champion at 140lbs – is confident of defeating the Briton a second time as he knows what Khan can’t handle…

“A rematch is 99 percent confirmed,” said Khan (26-2-0, 18ko) the day after losing his brace of belts to Peterson.

Khan began the fight in scintillating fashion. His blistering and furious hand speed appeared to have Peterson perturbed, yet the American switched game-plans from an outside fight where he would box, to an inside contest; an area he increasingly gained the upper hand in as he pummeled Khan’s body with power punches and reduced Khan to a shoving match in order for him to take regain his control of distance, something he was eventually docked a point for in round seven.

“I would love to fight him again,” confirmed Peterson (30-1-1, 15ko) to Boxing Talk,” before opining that the rematch would contain a different style of fight but the outcome would be the same. He also commented that he will act as Amir’s worst type of fighter as he now has intimate knowledge of Khan’s style, and knows exactly what works against him.

“I made good adjustments in the fight, but I make even better ones in rematches. I haven’t had one as a pro, and I really believe that a rematch with Khan would be a totally different fight and another victory for me. The rematch will be an easy fight,” he mused. “I wouldn’t change my game plan too much.

“I don’t plan to box as it’s easy to see that Khan has trouble fighting on the inside, and I am a much better fighter on the inside. I will bring the fight to the inside as much as possible. All in all it will be the same game plan except that I don’t plan on taking many punches while I am coming in.”

When probed as to whether the statements of a March, 31 fight in Las Vegas were concrete, he remarked: “There is nothing official about that yet.

“This is business and my team has to agree on the terms. I will be pushing for it, but if my team can’t come up with an agreement at the table, then we will move elsewhere,” he conceded. “At this point, it would be stupid not to weigh my options. I want a big fight, and my team wants to see what is out there.”
