Emerging heavyweight Seth Mitchell has been touted by promoter Oscar de la Hoya as the saviour of the division for America, a nation who have not had a big man to celebrate for some time as the axis of power swung to Europe, however, on December 10, at the Washington Convention Center, contender Timur Ibragimov succumbed to a second round technical knockout as Mitchell’s power and precision ruined the Uzbeki.

Official verdict: Second round technical knockout for Mitchell.

Mitchell began the fight well by boxing, like he said he would, with aggression and landed telling left hands as early as round one. In the next stanza, Mitchell beat Ibragimov down with Hollywood punches, taking the foreign fighter’s legs away from him with a left hand that set up the overhand right, a left hook from the inside, thudding right hooks on the jaw, right hands over the top onto the temple… each punch was well thought out and the referee halted proceedings in the second round as Ibragimov was being handed a methodical beating.

It was the first time Ibragimov, who has boxed Oliver McCall and Jean-Marc Mormeck, failed to go the distance and represented a stunning win for the American. With the victory, Mitchell moves to 24-0-1, 18ko.
