If Pacquiao defeated Mayweather Jr it would be an ‘exciting victory’ – MMA star BJ Penn

Robert Delgado – Los Angeles

The prospective super fight between welterweight champions Floyd Mayweather Jr (WBC) and Manny Pacquiao (WBO) has inspired much debate over whom would have that edge that would secure their victory. BJ Penn, a mixed martial artist who has successfully campaigned in the Ultimate Fighting Championship having secured world titles in two separate divisions, goes against his fellow American, Mayweather, and confesses his admiration for the Filipino.

“Pacquiao, he’s my kind of fighter, I’m a fan of his,” Penn explained to abs-cbnNEWS.com during a recent trip to Manila, Philippines. “I like his style. He tries to go for the finish.”

Pacquiao’s effortless attraction of global adulation hit full tilt when he began obliterating a plethora of top quality opposition that included Erik Morales, Marco Antonio Barrera, Oscar de la Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito.

However, he has not knocked out anyone since his Cotto victory and his sub-par performance in November against Mexican rival Juan Manuel Marquez, underlined an underwhelming year as he was also not his typical self when he decisioned Shane Mosley.

The slip in standards has seen Pacquiao (54-3-2, 38ko) lose his grip on the number one pound-for-pound spot in a few publications’ lists, who instead installed Mayweather – whose skills continue to be punch perfect – as the P4P king. Penn, though, is not deterred by Pacquiao’s recent performances and believes the ambidextrous 32-year-old pressure fighter can trump Floyd and, if he did, it would be nothing short of “exciting”.

He said: “I would like to see Pacquiao win because I know if Pacquiao wins, it’s gonna be an exciting victory.”

Penn has an MMA record of 26 fights and 16 wins (7 by ko, 6 by submission and 3 by decision).
