Amir Khan on Manny Pacquiao fight: It’s just rumours people make up

Tommy Barber – London

British super lightweight Amir Khan, who defends his WBA/IBF unified championship on Saturday, December 10 against mandatory challenger Lamont Peterson of the States, has been linked with super showdowns against Manny Pacquiao and/or Floyd Mayweather Jr in the near future, however, the fast-fisted volume-puncher has discounted a bout with Wildcard Boxing Club gym-mate Pacman: “It’s just rumours,” the 24-year-old said.

“That fight will never happen,” Khan explicitly stated during a teleconference call to the listening boxing media ahead of his examination against Peterson, a boxer-puncher who hails from the same town the fight is staged in – Washington DC.

“I’ve always said to Freddie and Manny, Manny knows himself; we won’t fight each other. We have too much respect for each other.”

In 2008, Khan (26-1-0, 18ko) was coached by Jorge Rubio – a former trainer of the Cuban amateur national team – however, their partnership failed and in September of the same year, Amir succumbed to his sole professional defeat to Breidis Prescott, a banger who has since turned into a jabber. Khan swiftly parted ways with Rubio and ventured to Los Angeles where he joined Freddie Roach’s stable of fighters at the renowned Wildcard gym.

Khan was thrust into heavy sparring straight away with Roach’s premier pupil Pacquiao, something the Briton himself admits was fundamental in his rebirth as a boxer: “I remember when I moved to the Wild Card Gym, and Manny was a big help bringing me back and also helping me out in stuff and training.

“We also trained together and this camp [preparations for Peterson] we didn’t spar together or anything because I have a different [style of] opponent. Also, I trained a little bit later than Manny [did for his third fight with Juan Manuel Marquez].

“But everything was cool,” he reiterated. “I think these are rumours people make up.”

Freddie Roach added: “You just heard it. I mean, they’re friends and that’s the way it is. They have a lot of respect for me and each other, and I don’t see it happening.

“There are a lot of other fights out there and we’ll look forward to them.”
