Khan alters opinion on Pacquiao v Marquez: Manny won by one or two rounds

Robert Delgado – Los Angeles

Amir Khan‘s alleged calls for Wildcard Boxing Gym stablemate Manny Pacquiao to retire following the WBO welterweight world championship incumbent’s unconvincing victory over Mexican nemesis Juan Manuel Marquez last weekend have been rectified by the British boxer, who explained that his words were put into the wrong context and consequently twisted. Furthermore, Khan watched the contest a second time and scored a triumph for the Filipino.

Khan (26-1-0, 18ko) was ringside at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas as he was calling the shots for British pay-per-view broadcaster Primetime, a channel that aired his WBA super lightweight world title defence against Paul McCloskey earlier in the year together with his unification fight with Zab Judah in the summer.

Watching live, Khan commented that he was not witnessing a fight that Pacquiao (54-3-2, 38ko) was winning and instead favoured the Mexican warhorse; Marquez (53-6-1, 39ko), however, after watching the contest a second time, the fast fisted aggressive combination puncher has altered his opinion: “I just watched the Pacquiao versus Marquez fight again and looks like Pacquiao did win the fight by one or two rounds.

“What a fight,” he added. “It reminded me a lot about our sparring sessions together.”

In the aftermath of Pacquiao’s contentious majority decision verdict, much was made of Manny’s substandard year, the decline in his performances since the high of 2009 and before and such reports seemed to be compounded when articles were released that quoted Khan to have said he would recommend Pacquiao retire the next time he saw him. Khan, though, has refuted this.

“In The Telegraph article my words were taken in the wrong context and twisted about the Pacquiao and Marquez fight.”

Khan is currently based in the US as he is training for his third fight of the year, scheduled for Saturday, December 10 in Washington, against boxer-puncher Lamont Peterson (29-1-1, 15ko). Both Khan’s WBA and IBF titles will be on the line.
