Emanuel Steward sees Thomas Hearns in headhunting Kronk Gym novice Tony Harrison

Denzil Stone – Atlantic City

An excited Emanuel Steward believes he may have unearthed an incarnate of all-time great Thomas Hearns as he sees great promise in Kronk Gym fledgling Tony Harrison; a super welterweight prospect from Detroit who is a knockout artist and an in-ring gambler with great style. Harrison, who keeps world champion company in Wladimir Klitschko, is also from boxing cloth as his father and grandfather were both fighters…

Harrison only made his professional debut in the summer but he has already made an incredible impression on the boxing community. He announced himself on the undercard of heavyweight king Wladimir Klitschko’s dominant decisioning of David Haye in Hamburg, on July 2, with a first round stoppage over Uwe Tritschler (see embedded video below, credit: Youtube, Yalter777).

Since then, he has accrued three further knockout triumphs – all in the first round – and his aggressive gung-ho attitude has Kronk owner Steward drawing parallels to Hearns (61-5-1, 48ko); boxing’s first ever five-weight world champion and famed for his fights with fellow 80s kings Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler and Roberto Duran.

In an exuberance that befits his 21-years, Harrison is eager to maintain his perfect 4-0-0, 4ko record: “I get people out of there as fast as I can. I fear nobody. I want to keep my KO record intact,” he told the Detroit Free Press.

“If you get in the shower, you’ve got to get wet. If people fight me, they know I’m not going to be easy on them.” Indeed, Tritschler found that out when he boxed the then-dubutant earlier in the year. Boxing in an orthodox posture, Harrison rarely took a backwards step as he was the clear aggressor, had commendable ring generalship, measured the distance with his jab before pummeling away at the German’s midsection with left hook shots.

It was a body shot that felled Tritschler… Harrison’s jab set-up the right cross that was landed with aplomb directly into the solar plexus. His opponent made the count but, showing good finishing ability, Harrison let his punches go until referee Oliver Brien waved the bout off and awarded Harrison with the technical knockout.

It is this desire to claim his enemies head and hang it above his fireplace at home that has Steward purring. Of the 6’1 Harrison, who was an amateur standout with a 75-11 record, Steward said: “He reminds me of Tommy [Hearns]. He wants to knock the other guy out. He doesn’t like to play it safe. He is a gambler – a stylish boxer but a hard puncher.”

The Kronk set-up favours Harrison as he has already reaped the benefit of being around influential world champions like Wladimir: “”I hung around Wladimir. He was a good guy. I learned a lot from him.”

Boxing is a part of Harrison’s blood as the pro novice explained that his father and trainer is Ali Salaam (11-6-0, 5ko) and his grandfather was Henry Hank (62-31-4, 40ko) who, despite his numerous losses, showed great mettle as he was stopped just once. He passed away in 2002: “My grandfather came in a wheelchair to watch my first amateur fight,” reminisced Harrison.

“He fought the best, and I can’t wait to do the same.”

Its such as you read my mind! You seem to grasp a lot about this, such as you wrote the book in it or something. I think that you simply could do with some percent to force the message house a bit, however other than that, that is great blog. A great read. I’ll certainly be back.
