Lewkowicz laughs off Pacquiao – Martinez at 147, Manny willing to box at 150

In wake of past revelations that Manny Pacquiao would take a fight against lineal middleweight champion Sergio Martinez within the confines of the welterweight limit of 147lbs, Maravilla’s adviser – Sampson Lewkowicz – has commented that such a statement is insulting, as it would “kill” the Argentine. Lewkowicz, Martinez’s coaching staff and Sergio himself have all stated 150lbs is the lowest they can go – something Pacquiao this week has said he could accept.

“It’s so ridiculous,” Lewkowicz exclaimed on Fight Hype.

An eight-weight world champion, one of the divisions Pacquiao (53-3-2, 38ko) has won a world title in is super welterweight, when he decisioned Antonio Margarito in a brutal pulverisation that left the proud Mexican with a fractured orbital bone and numerous surgeries. The contest, though, was not fought at the super welter limit of 154lbs but, rather, a 150lbs catchweight. Lewkowicz alluded to potential double-standard at Pacquiao not returning to a weight he has boxed in before – at championship level – in order to meet his ward.

He continued: “Pacquiao fought at 150 against Margarito; he needs to go to 150 [to fight Martinez]. Offering 147 is a good excuse for him. It proves that Pacquiao really doesn’t want to fight Martinez. For the first time, I believe Pacquiao’s not brave enough to say Martinez is too big. I agree with his management that Martinez is too big, but don’t tell me 147 because that insults my intelligence!

“[Welterweight] would kill my guy so I’d prefer to fight [Wladimir or Vitali] Klitschko in the heavyweight division!” Quipped Lewkowicz, before concluding that Martinez (pictured above left) intends on witnessing the upcoming Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez dust-up in Las Vegas: “He will be at the Pacquiao fight – just to watch the fight, not to challenge anyone because he knows he’s too big.”

Pacquiao was asked at an open media workout this week what his thoughts were on a fight with Martinez at 150lbs, to which he responded: “Yes [I’m willing to take that fight],” before stating, as reported by ESNewsReporting that he is currently focused on defeating his long-time rival on November 12: “I’ve been fighting bigger guys but now I’m fighting a guy the same size in Marquez.”
