Saul Alvarez v Kermit Cintron is what is wrong with boxing – Team Molina

Denzil Stone – Atlantic City

The November 26 super welterweight championship fight slated to occur in Mexico between reigning WBC titlist Saul Canelo Alvarez and challenger Kermit Cintron is one of the reasons why boxing is in decline, according to Carlos Molina and his team. Revitalised 154lb operator Molina, of Mexico, decisioned Kermit in his last outing yet it is The Frog who has jumped ahead of him in obtaining a crack at Canelo’s world title.

Since Molina (19-4-2, 6ko) returned to the sport following a near two year sojourn, he was aligned with Cuban hotshot Erislandy Lara in March, 2011 and achieved a draw that some quarters disputed, believing the Mexican had done enough for the win. To follow up his tie score with Lara, Molina stopped Allen Conyers before convincingly out-pointing Cintron. The 28-year-old’s stock enhanced from fight to fight yet, Cintron’s, in contrast, has been one in decline since his questionable majority draw with Sergio Martinez.

Aside from a trumping of Alfredo Angulo, Cintron (33-4-1, 28ko) has been made to labour in his contests, dropped a technical decision loss to Paul Williams in 2010 and was second best against Molina, however, the 32-year-old Puerto Rican won a unanimous decision over Antwone Smith in a victory that appears to have set-up his world title shot at Alvarez (38-0-1, 28ko).

“That sums it up right there, the way boxing is,” fumed Molina recently. “I won the fight and they give the shot to the guy I beat. They didn’t even offer me the fight. Why?”

Leon Margules of Warriors Boxing believes the answer lies within Molina’s sterling performance since his ring return, heralding his ward as the world’s best at super welterweight: “Carlos is the best 154lb fighter in the world and the top fighters are avoiding him. I understand that fighters don’t want to lose but what about HBO letting Alvarez take the easier road by fighting a guy my guy just beat?

“He destroyed Cintron and despite that, somehow they are putting Cintron in while Carlos’ phone doesn’t ring. What happened to serving the paying customers by putting on the best fights between the best fighters? Carlos will fight anyone in the world at 154 or 147lbs.'”

Margules continued: “You’ve got a fighter who comes back from two years off and scores two huge wins over two top guys and knocks out another well-thought-of fighter on ESPN in impressive fashion. It’s a Cinderella story. Carlos is an exciting fighter who comes forward and throws a lot of punches. He outboxes these guys with old-school techniques. So why is he getting stepped over for a shot at Canelo? It’s not like HBO tried to make the better fight and Carlos wasn’t available. His phone never rang.

“Situations like this are a problem for our sport,” said Margules. “It’s disgraceful,” he added. “Maybe with the new regime beginning over at HBO these kinds of things will no longer happen.”

Molina concluded: “Hopefully one of these other guys on top will have what it takes to fight me. I’ll just stay in shape and wait it out.”
