Koncz doesn’t believe Pacquiao v Mayweather will happen but Roach foresees trilogy

Michael Koncz, the adviser to eight weight world champion Manny Pacquiao, does not believe a super fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr will ever be successfully negotiated because the latter continues to seek new excuses not to book the bout. Pacquiao’s trainer, Freddie Roach, though, has spoken of the possibilities of a trilogy of fights in order to provide a decisive victor. In that scenario, Roach stated it would be Pacquiao’s last three contests before retirement.

“I don’t believe that the fight will ever be made,” Koncz said conclusively to The Ring. “Floyd always seems to find new excuses when we come to terms on a prior excuse.

“I truly wish that the fight could be made and I know that the fans want that fight to be made but Manny doesn’t need the fight. Manny has done more for boxing than anyone has, I believe. Manny’s legacy is cemented. If Floyd wants to fight, then he has to call us. We’re not chasing him. But I seriously don’t believe that the fight is ever going to happen.”

A showdown between Pacquiao (53-3-2, 38ko) and Mayweather Jr (42-0-0, 26ko) would represent what is expected to be the most lucrative fight in the history of boxing, even surpassing the pay-per-view figures reached for Floyd’s scrap with Oscar de la Hoya (2,400,000 PPV buys or $134.4 million domestic PPV revenue).

Whilst the exceptional finances could be guaranteed, the fight outcome is anything but as both boxers are arguably at the peak of their powers and, stylistically, it pits the most unrelenting attack in modern boxing against the most impenetrable of defences.

For coach Roach, in a statement that counters what Koncz said, a hat-trick of contests would not be out of the question: “Everyone wants Mayweather. Of course, we’re all getting a little tired of hearing his name because he doesn’t want to fight Manny but hopefully, that fight will happen,” said the trainer to The Philippine Star.

“That fight is so interesting, it could end up being a trilogy. Actually, it could be the last three fights for Manny, if the fight goes as we see it because they’re both very, very good fighters so it’s a fight we want. There’s nobody out there for Manny anymore.

“Manny might just end up fighting Mayweather after all,” concluded the 51-year-old.
