Piyarat Wachairarattanawongse, the manager of long-reigning WBC flyweight world champion Pongsaklek Wonjongkam, has lauded the performance of the Thai boxer as he successfully defended his belt against commendable challenger Edgar Sosa at the 11th Infantry Regiment in the Bang Khen district on Friday, October 21. Pongsaklek commented that the fight was comfortable and he expects to continue boxing for two more years.

“It was one of his best fights,” Wonjongkam’s manager explained, as reported by the Bangkok Post. Pongsaklek (83-3-1, 45ko) built up a formidable lead during the first half of the contest with his southpaw posturing and left hook punch proving difficult for Sosa to contest against.

“He worked hard for the fight and deserved the win,” Wachairarattanawongse added. “I have to give credit to all concerned parties for a good job.”

The 34-year-old fighter, who has had two reigns as WBC ruler since 2001, is trained by Chatchai Sasakul who was delighted that his charge adhered to the tactics and gameplan that he had constructed: “Our strategy was good and Pongsaklek’s jabs effectively kept Sosa at bay.”

According to NationMultiMedia, the world titlist himself said: “After five rounds, I knew I would win. His punches were not as hard as I expected. That might be down to the fact he moved up a division and made a long flight from Mexico to come here.

“In the closing rounds, he was visibly tiring, while I was still okay following good training preparation. I think I can fight on for at least two more years.”

It is expected that Wonjongkam will defend his belt one more time in 2011.
