Consultation with Calzaghe leaves Cleverly confident he can de-crown Hopkins in Cardiff

Welsh boxing star Nathan Cleverly is aiming to take down the other light heavyweight world champions one by one, starting with WBC belt holder and consensus number one operator at 175lbs; Bernard Hopkins, an opponent whom friend and former sparring partner Joe Calzaghe – who retired undefeated the same year he slayed B-Hop in 2008 – believes he will beat with ease in a super fight staged in Cardiff’s colossal Millenium Stadium.

“My dream is to become the unified light-heavyweight champion of the world,” he declared, as quoted by Wales Online.

Cleverly (23-0-0, 11ko) has made two successful defences of the WBO belt he was awarded earlier in the year due to a fourth round technical knockout of Aleksy Kuziemski and a points win over domestic rival Tony Bellew. Now the ambitious Briton wants to annex the three other major championship titles – the WBA strap held by Beibut Shumenov; the IBF crown adorned by Tavoris Cloud and the WBC belt owned by Bernard Hopkins.

The Philadelphian ‘Executioner’, Hopkins (52-6-2, 32ko) was recently involved in an eventful, dramatic and controversial fight at the Staples Center in Los Angeles earlier in the month when a shoulder injury inhibited his ability to continue his bout against challenger Chad Dawson and succumbed to a second round technical knockout. Dawson was awarded the WBC title, temporarily, before the Council over-ruled the referee’s decision and returned the belt to B-Hop.

During Dawson’s preparations for Hopkins, he enlisted the aid of Winky Wright, who had experience fighting Hopkins. Cleverly may well be replicating such an advantage as he is seeking the counsel of Calzaghe, who decisioned Hopkins three years ago in Las Vegas. Calzaghe obtained the victory due to his work-rate, an attribute Cleverly himself is famed for: “Calzaghe told me I can beat Hopkins because he wouldn’t like my type of style.”

The 24-year-old from Cefn Fforest continued: “He’s been in the ring with him so he should know, and I think I’ve got a style which will give him problems.

“Hopkins is a fighter who would give anyone problems,” noted Clev. “But it’s a fight that could happen.”

Such a bout would make financial sense should it be staged in Cardiff’s impressive 75,000-90,000 capacity Millenium Stadium, which has held boxing events before (Matt Skelton v Danny Williams – 2006; Calzaghe v Peter Manfredo Jr – 2007 and Calzaghe v Mikkel Kessler – 2007).
