Bradley no match for Manny, Pacquiao team want Mayweather Jr challenge – Roach

Robert Delgado – Los Angeles

The prospect of seeing dominant welterweight Manny Pacquiao matched-up with super lightweight titlist with the WBO, Timothy Bradley, is not something enthused by trainer Freddie Roach as the owner of the Wildcard Boxing Club in Hollywood, California, does not foresee Bradley providing a challenge. The only prizefighter who could push his pupil, he claims, is undefeated American; Floyd Mayweather Jr.

“Is that all we’ve got? Timothy Bradley? Bradley is not that big of a name,” Roach explained to 8countnews. “I want a challenge, and I just don’t see Bradley and these other guys as a challenge at this point.”

Bradley, like Mayweather Jr, is an unbeaten professional boxer, however, he has been seen as more of a natural rival to one of Roach’s other proteges – Amir Khan – rather than Pacquiao (53-3-2, 38ko) as both he and the Briton are considered the top two fighters at 140lbs. Furthermore, they are both champions of the division.

It has only been since Bradley’s promotional dispute with former representatives Gary Shaw Productions and his consequent addition to the stable at Top Rank (who also house Pacquiao) that has seen his name linked more often to Manny’s. Such a fight, though, at this stage, is not something Roach entertains as there is only one man he wants to align Pacquiao with.

“We want Mayweather next,” Roach exclaimed. “Mayweather is a challenge.”

He continued: “It doesn’t look like it’s going to happen at this point, but I certainly hope it does. I am like everyone else in the world, I want this fight to happen just like you do.”

Pacquiao’s most immediate task is to conclusively dispose of former featherweight and super featherweight rival Juan Manuel Marquez in a rubber match at a welterweight catchweight of 144lbs on Saturday, November 12 in Las Vegas. Should, as is expected, Pacquiao secure the victory, then he will return to the ring – likely in March – but if Bradley (27-0-0, 11ko) does end up being the man Pacquiao is due to box, Roach foresees another win.

“If Bradley is the guy, I am sure Manny will take care of it.”
