Arum lambasts Narvaez’s performance against Donaire: ‘He came for his check’

Prominent boxing promoter Bob Arum, of Top Rank, the firm who staged the recent fight card staged at the WaMu Theater in the Madison Square Garden, New York City, has criticised the performance of Omar Narvaez as, he believes, the Argentine came to the US to get paid – not to fight – against his ward; Nonito Donaire. The Filipino Flash won a decision over the 12 round distance on October 22 in a bout which Narvaez was content to cover up.

A proud boxing nation, Argentina has produced many notable fighters such as current lineal middleweight champion Sergio Martinez, hard-punching super lightweight pair Lucas Matthysse and Marcos Maidana, as well as past greats such as Carlos Monzon, Nicolino Locche and Oscar Bonavena.

By drafting in Narvaez, Arum expected a fighter in the model of attack-happy Martinez, Matthysse or Maidana, not a fighter with a focus on defence, like Locche. He said on ESPN: “I never saw an Argentine fighter fight that way. I knew the guy was a tremendous boxer. I thought he would come to fight.”

Donaire (27-1-0, 18ko) was the aggressor throughout the contest… he threw punches in abundance compared to the visiting fighter Narvaez (35-1-2, 19ko) who adopted a tight defensive shell, fought timidly and only unleashed sporadic single shots. Nonito even commented on his stool before the start of the 12th round that he was ‘bored’.

Arum continued: “[Narvaez] realised he couldn’t go with Donaire, so he was in survival mode the whole time. Once he got hurt like never before, he chucked it in.

“It doesn’t reflect badly on Nonito,” the veteran promoted said, before concluding: “It reflects badly on Narvaez. He came for his check.”
