Ring legend Bernard Hopkins succumbed to a second round technical knockout when he took on challenger Chad Dawson on October 15 in Los Angeles, however, such was the nature of the ending of the fight – with Hopkins on his back after an accidental foul deemed no foul by the referee – the Philadelphian was immediately taken to a medical centre for assessment where it was found he had dislocated his shoulder.

In the middle of the night, Hopkins (52-6-2, 34ko) was released from the California Hospital Medical Center and, following a consultation with Dr Sam Thurber, MD and study of an x-ray, it was discovered that the erstwhile WBC and The Ring magazine champion – who lost his light heavyweight belts to Dawson (31-1-0, 18ko) – had suffered a separation of the acromioclavicular joint.

Commonly known as shoulder separation, the injury occurs when the joint connecting the clavicle (collar bone) is separated from the scapula (shoulder blade). The result can commonly occur in sports due to a direct blow or when a fall onto an outstretched hand.

Surgery is not a mandatory requirement for shoulder separation, but depends on the individual injury. Barring complications to recovery, it can take between two to four weeks to fully recover.

Trailing by scores of 99-91 and 98-92 (twice) going into the 11th round, DeMarco belted a bloodied Linares around the ring until referee Raul Caiz, Sr. halted the action at 2:23 for a dramatic comeback win by Demarco.

Unbeaten junior welterweight Danny “Swift” Garcia won a 12-round split decision versus former world champion Kendall “Rated R” Holt (27-5, 15 KOs) for the vacant NABO title in an eliminator for the WBC #1 and IBF #2 positions.
