Linares confident after sparring with Pacquiao, Roach heralds his ‘real deal’ product

Even though Venezuelan lightweight Jorge Linares is a work in progress, astute trainer Freddie Roach is confident his fighter will prevail over Antonio DeMarco at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Saturday, October 15 and become his latest world champion. In preparation for the bout against DeMarco – a 25-year-old southpaw – Linares has been busy sparring with stablemate Manny Pacquiao; the best leftie on the planet.

“Jorge is [the] real deal,” Roach – a five time recipient of the trainer of the year award – said, as reported by the Glendale Boxing Examiner. “He has always been a good fighter,” the American coach added of the 26-year-old who has competed in 32 professional fights and boxed a total of 179 rounds.

In a mutually-beneficial partnership, Roach added Linares (31-1-0, 20ko) to Pacquiao’s training camp in Baguio City, the Philippines. Linares’ right hand was regarded to provide a sound mimic to what Juan Manuel Marquez will be striking Pacquiao (53-3-2, 38ko) with come Saturday, November 12 in the MGM Grand Garden Arena, Las Vegas. Pacquiao, too, with his portside posturing would naturally give Linares rounds to attempt to circumvent the southpaw stance.

It was a set-up that was familiar to both fighters, as Roach explained: “He and Manny have worked together many times in the past. It started about six or eight years ago and they became friends.

“We started eight weeks out because Jorge needed the work with fighting a southpaw. Manny carried the load the whole way. The have worked together for four rounds all the way up to twelve rounds together and just finished four rounds on Monday (October 10).

“Working with the best southpaw in the world has helped his confidence in his ability,” noted Roach.

Fully expectant of seeing his charge lift aloft the WBC version of the 135lb championship, Roach assessed Linares’ strengths and weaknesses, saying: “Jorge is a great boxer [and a] great combination puncher. He is going to have to sit down on his punches a little bit more and use his power a little bit more. I expect him to be a world champion on Saturday.”

Linares and DeMarco constitute a key part of the Believe It Or Not undercard. Light heavyweight rivals Bernard Hopkins and Chad Dawson headline the event.
