Robert Delgado – Los Angeles

Three-fight professional Larry Hopkins – no relation to Bernard who headlines the Believe It Or Not card along with Chad Dawson – has been selected as the opponent for 52-year-old boxing debutant Dewey Bozella who realises a lifelong dream when he fights professional for the first time having spent 26 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. The cruiserweight bout is scheduled for four threes and will be highlighted by HBO on Saturday, October 15.

Bozella, whose incredible story was profiled by On The Beak here, will box on the untelevised undercard at the Staples Center, Los Angeles and, swiftly hang up his gloves in order to open up his own gym and provide children and young adults with a place to learn the discipline of the sweet science.

A light heavyweight champion at the Sing Sing Correctional Facility in New York, Bozella has a solid amateur background. Larry Hopkins, meanwhile, has lost thrice, all by knockout – two of which occurred in the first round, the other in the second round.

Of Bozella’s experience, Bernard Hopkins, who has trained with Bozella at the Joe Hand boxing club in Philadelphia, said: “At the end of the day, what Dewey did is beyond anything that I’ve done in the ring; it is beyond anything I accomplished outside of the ring in my personal [life].”
